In 2021, the Town of Middlebury, Better Middlebury Partnership, Addison County Chamber of Commerce, Addison County Economic Development Corporation, Vermont Small Business Development Center, Middlebury College, and several Middlebury area businesses and property owners partnered to create the Kick Start Middlebury initiative. The project welcomed any and all ideas for businesses that would add to a vibrant Main Street mix, provide residents and visitors with experiential opportunities, and bring new energy and jobs to the town.
Kick Start Middlebury offered a package of valuable start-up incentives to six finalists to locate a new or expanded operation in Middlebury. The package included free or discounted services and products donated by area businesses, a grant of up to $20,000 made available by the Town of Middlebury, Rotary Club of Middlebury, and Table 21, and various benefits offered by property owners. More than a cash prize and valuable start-up services, the initiative offered business support, coaching and connections to help all applicants advance their ideas.
Four of the six finalists have established new businesses in downtown Middlebury or will very soon. Plans for two of the finalists have not proceeded. Therefore, there are funds remaining, so we are offering a Kick Start Middlebury Round Two.
For the second round of funding, Kick Start Middlebury will consider applications from businesses that are considering locating in Middlebury, with priority given to downtown locations on a first-come, first-serve timeline.
To be considered for the grant, entrepreneurs or business owners that would locate a new or expanded business in Middlebury must submit an application, a business proposal, financial projections, and FY21-22 financials (if an existing business). The documents will be evaluated by a committee against a set of criteria. Applicants will then be invited to an interview.
